In terms of form, Sells feels vessels can be more challenging than carving a figure. Similar to a figure, the vessel may convey motion, direction and balance, though it does so in an abstract way. Carving a free form vessel is like the art of Bonsai…there is a sense of flow and balance without harsh structural lines. A successful piece is often simple, spontaneous and not overworked. The “orbital” form is a signature element in many of Sells’ pieces. It represents nature and science. The orbital is envisioned at times as a cell, egg or electron. He also uses the orbital to reference planets, star systems, and human qualities.
